The Perfect Date Night in Downtown Gainesville

Jul 18, 2026

Some nights ask for more than a quick bite. An anniversary, a first date you want to get right, or a plain Tuesday you have decided to make special. Downtown Gainesville has a way of rising to those nights, and CHR Steak sits right in the middle of it at 126 Bradford St NE, a short walk from the square. This is our guide to putting together a date night here, from the first cocktail to the last bite.

Part of what makes downtown Gainesville work for a date is that it is walkable. The historic square and the streets around it are easy to stroll before or after dinner, so you can turn one reservation into a whole evening. Park once, take a walk, and let CHR be the anchor the night is built around.

Time it right

A good date night has a rhythm to it, and the easiest way to get that rhythm right is to think about timing. CHR serves dinner Tuesday through Sunday from 5 to 10 PM. If you like to ease in, come early and catch happy hour from 4:30 to 6, a relaxed way to start with a drink and a few bites before the room fills. If you would rather the night build toward a long, unhurried dinner, book a later table and let the meal stretch.

Parking is easy to sort out. There is free parking around the square and a few decks within a short walk, so you can leave the car once and spend the evening on foot. If you are making a night of the wider area, the Explore Georgia guide to Gainesville is a good place to see what else is nearby.

Settle into the room

Walk in and the space does a lot of the work for you. Warm light, leather banquettes you can settle into for a few hours, brass pendants overhead, and the dry-age room glowing behind glass with prime beef hanging in it. It is the kind of room that makes conversation easy and makes an ordinary evening feel like an occasion without trying too hard. If you want to know what that glass room is really doing, we wrote about why dry-aged steak tastes the way it does.

Ask for a banquette if you want to sit side by side, or take two seats at the bar if you like a little more energy and a front-row view of the cocktails coming together.

Start with a drink

The cocktail list leans toward the kind of thing you order when you are in no hurry. The Empress, made with empress gin and lavender, comes out a deep violet and is easy to share a first sip of. The Smoked Pear pairs pear and champagne for something a little celebratory. If you are an espresso martini couple, the CHR-presso Martini is built for the back half of the night. There is also a full wine list and a wall of bottles behind the bar, so if wine is more your speed, your server can point you to something that suits the table. You can browse the cocktail and wine list on our menu before you come in.

Order something to share

Sharing early sets the tone for a date. The raw bar is a natural opener, whether that is oysters on the half shell or shrimp cocktail. From the small plates, the tuna cannoli, the crab arancini, and the champagne tempura lobster tails all travel well across the table. If you both like a bit of theater, the bone marrow arrives with a buffalo trace luge, which is exactly the kind of thing that turns into a story later.

The main event

Then the steaks. A steakhouse date gives you two nice ways to go. You can each order your own, a filet and a ribeye, or the wagyu strip if you are marking something. Or you can share one big cut and make a night of it. Here are a few ways couples tend to build the table:

  • Share the 32 ounce tomahawk, a cut built for two.
  • Reach for the in-house dry-aged porterhouse, cowboy ribeye, or T-bone, cut to order from beef aged at least four weeks.
  • Add seared scallops or a lobster tail on top of any steak.
  • Pass a couple of sides, and yes, the lobster truffle mac and cheese is worth it.

A quiet word to your server about the occasion goes a long way here.

If the night is a real one, say so when you book and again when you arrive. Ask what is in the dry-age room that evening. The answer changes, and it is a good way to order something you will remember. Not eating red meat tonight is no problem either, with sea bass, salmon, seared scallops, a squid ink shrimp linguini, and a rotating list of sides and salads on the full menu.

Make it a bigger night

Some celebrations outgrow a table for two. If you are folding in family or friends, our private dining room, the Executive Suite, seats up to 28 with its own service, which suits milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and engagement dinners. Regulars who love the steak program can go a step further with the Blade Club, and if you would rather your date come with a soundtrack, keep an eye on our live music and events calendar for dinner-and-a-show nights.

End slow

Leave room to slow down at the end. A shared dessert and a nightcap, or a coffee cocktail if you started with wine, is a fitting way to close the evening before you head back out into downtown Gainesville.

That is the whole arc of a date night here: an easy walk, a drink you are in no hurry to finish, something to share, a great steak, and a slow finish. When you are ready, reserve your table on OpenTable and give downtown Gainesville a night you will both want to repeat.
